Just like any good relationship, the more you put into your goals, the more they’ll give back to you.

I’ll tell you a secret – I actually used to groan when I heard the word ‘goalsetting’. It used to make me feel like a failure. I gave up before I even tried.

But these days I love goalsetting… gosh, I even run an annual goalsetting event! And that’s because I’ve learned a thing or two about what works (and what really, really doesn’t work).

So, in this blog I want to share the critical elements of goalsetting with you to help you get 2020 off to success.

First of all, I want to preface all of this by saying now, more than ever it’s vital for each of us to be stepping up and showing up and playing big. It’s easy to play it small, to stay in comfort zones – but honestly, with the recent devastation in our country it’s helped me realise that we all need to give away with playing small and we need to start setting and achieving our true purpose in life.

We have to stop putting things off to ‘tomorrow’. That’s what got the world in this mess to begin with. Start today.

So, if you’re going to start AND succeed, I want to share the 3 most important things you need to know to give you a head start.

You see, a lot of people set goals ‘consciously’. But that isn’t nearly as powerful as setting goals both consciously and unconsciously. It is possible to learn how set goals that actually get implanted in your subconscious mind using NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming).. which is all kinds of cool. Visualisation is also very powerful as well as ensuring you’re in the right emotional state when you think about your goals.

The 3 most important fool proof elements you need to cover BEFORE you set a goal are:

  • VALUES
  • BELIEFS
  • ACTION

1. Values

Our values are what is most important to us.

And if you want to set goals, you kind of need to know (and when I say kind of, what I mean is you REALLY need to know) what’s most important to you in terms of your values.

Your values are like your fingerprints, and all of our values are unique. And we filter our entire reality based on our values.

Most disagreements actually stem from people with competing values. For example, someone with a high value on wealth is going to prioritise things differently to someone with a high value on the environment. We often find it hard to understand others and WHY people do what they do. Well, it all boils down to their intrinsic motivators (their values).

We naturally spend our time and money and energy in the areas of life that are our highest values.

So, you need to know what your values are before you set your goals, as in a lot of cases we can set a goal but if it competes with or threatens a value, then guess what – we will self sabotage.

A great example of this is a health related goal.

Lots of women in business (with kids) have a high value on business and a high value on family. So, say for example they start feeling low on energy and they decide to set a goal to lost weight. There could be a subconscious conflict because health is a lower value than business and family – so even though we say we want to lose weight, we prioritise the kid pick up and the business to-do list over getting to the gym.

So first, discover your values, and when you know your values, decision making (and goalsetting) is easy.

2. Beliefs

If you set a goal and you have 0% belief you can achieve it.. then guess what? You have 0% ability to achieve it. There is no point.

If you are going to set a goal, you need to ensure your beliefs back it up.

This is something I’ve seen many people fail with. They set a goal and when they think about the goal they are full of doubt and uncertainty. I teach people how to feel 100% confident about achieving their goals.

This is not fluff or woo woo, this is reality.

We filter reality based on our beliefs – and if you believe you can do something, then you can (and you will take dramatically different action – my next point) and you will.

3. ACTION

This is a bit of a no-brainer, but you do actually need to take action – and make sure you have clear small actionable steps (a task list) as well as a list of thing you will do when things go wrong or obstacles arise.

Take action, one small step every single day.

And sometimes an action is asking for help or doing research. Sometimes also action is adjusting your goal, or adjusting your deadline. Remember, there are no unrealistic goals or unrealistic deadlines.

But ultimately, goals are not meant to be just words on a page.

Goals are living, breathing, changing, transforming. Goals need love and attention. They love to be read aloud, they love to be refined. And just like any good relationship, the more you put into your goals, the more they’ll give back to you.

So, there you have, the 3 critical factors you need to be aware of when setting goals.

Step up – dream big – the world needs you!
